Safely Buy and Sell Your 3D Content: Exchange3D.com Becomes First HackerSafe On-line Store to Sell Downloadable 3D Content
Cupertino, CA (PRWEB) November 12, 2006
While the amount of digital media sold on-line is rapidly growing, so does the need to secure the on-line stores that sell downloadable content. Increasingly, valuable digital content is being stolen from the websites. Today, hundreds of websites allow CG artists to sell their 3D models, textures, materials, and other digital content on-line. However, http://www.Exchange3D.com is the only such store that provides CG artists with confidence that their 3D models will not be hijacked by the “bad guys”.
In order to ensure safety for CG artists who sell their 3D models, textures, and materials on Exchange3D.com, and for the customers who buy the digital content, Exchange3D has signed up for Hacker Safe® protection. Hacker Safe® performs daily scans of Exchange3D.com to ensure up-to-date protection against hacker attacks. 3D artists can now be assured that their content will not be stolen from the website.
Both shoppers and sellers can feel safe about the websites where they see the HACKER SAFE® certification mark. Because the only way the mark appears on the website is if the site passes the “FBI/SANS Internet Security Test.” Unlike many other security certifications Hacker Safe® is always up-to-date. The scans are performed daily, and if at any day the website does not pass the security tests, the sign is removed.
“Hacker Safe® protection is absolutely vital to our business, because safety of our artistic content is our top priority”, says Vlad Shamgin the founder and art director of Exchange3D LLC.
About Exchange3D LLC:
Exchange3D.com was founded in 1998 as one of the first websites to allow 3D artists to trade their digital media on-line. Today, Exchange3D.com focuses on providing the best services and the highest royalty rates to CG artists who want to sell their media without having to worry about infrastructure and marketing.

Unity’s 3D Game Engine Achieves Rapid Adoption By Leading Game Developers and Content Creators
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) February 20, 2008
Game Developers Conference – Feb. 18, 2008 – Unity Technologies, a 3D game development tool provider for creating console-quality web games, today showcased Tennis Stars Cup from ThreeMelons and Off-Road Velociraptor Safari by Flashbang Studios. Unity also featured a first-of-its-kind game odyssey launched this month by the world’s leading space and science visionary, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). These signature projects are among a growing roster of premiere game developers and visualization professionals who are embracing Unity as the new, definitive tool in content creation for today’s increasingly sophisticated 3D web environment.
Today, Unity also makes its formal debut at the Game Developers Conference, showcasing Unity 2.0. Leveraging the Unity team’s extensive experience in game development, Unity delivers a no-friction workflow for easier game development, high-performance 3D rendering, physics and streaming for fast loading immersive worlds, as well as a combination of innovative technologies for creating visually superior content.
“Unity is the only game engine on the market today that addresses the unique needs of the developer and publisher alike. For the game developer, Unity’s team collaboration tools obliterate workflow issues – resulting in significant time-to-market wins,” said David Helgason, CEO and co-founder of Unity Technologies. “For the publisher, Unity delivers a seamless download where the gamer remains on the content page. For the gamer, there’s no payload, no registration required – just delivery of console-quality web games that play on virtually any system, new or old.”
As a result, Unity is winning high-profile gaming converts including ThreeMelons and Flashbang Studios. Other key Unity customers include Trigger and Smashing Ideas who are working with media behemoths to create best of breed, 3D web games using Unity. Details of these projects will be unveiled in Q2 2008.
ThreeMelons & Flashbang Studios Release Console-Quality Online Games
This January two new Unity-built games debuted – ThreeMelons released Tennis Stars Cup at http://www.shockwave.com/gamelanding/tennisstarscup.jsp and Flashbang Studios released Off-Road Velociraptor Safari (Raptor Safari) at http://raptorsafari.com/.
ThreeMelons is an advergaming company that uses videogames to generate customers and bolster brand. Last October, ThreeMelons first submitted a tennis game demo to Unity’s Top DOG (Developer of Online Games) Contest, which ultimately won the attention of Shockwave.com – one of the most popular online gaming sites.
“We wanted to create high-quality games on the web and Unity is the only realistic option. It’s incredibly easy to learn, and very powerful. I’ve worked with several 3D engines in the past, and there’s truly no comparison,” said Joaquin Estragó, the lead developer at ThreeMelons. “The prototyping is direct and with an extremely quick turn-around. In Tennis Stars Cup, we had a working prototype within a week of starting.”
Both ThreeMelons and Flashbang required a 3D game development tool with a highly efficient workflow that delivered console-like graphics and great game play. However, Flashbang also had a seemingly impossible deadline.
“Unity had everything that we needed to make a great game. Our only hesitation was if we could learn the ‘ins and outs’ of this new tool without a significant time investment. Within a few days, we knew we would make our first deadline and that Unity would become a mainstay of Flashbang productions,” said Matthew Wegner, CEO of Flashbang Studios. “Unity provided the smoothest experience we’ve had in five years of game development and ultimately, it enabled us to deliver Raptor Safari in only eight short weeks.”
ThreeMelons and Flashbang are currently working on new projects – again both of which will be developed using Unity.
NASA/JPL Debut First-of-its-kind Game Odyssey
In addition to conventional game developers, the Unity engine is being used by visualization experts to develop the first-of-its-kind video game odyssey for NASA JPL. The project, “Cassini at Saturn Interactive Explorer” (CASSIE), showcases a 10-year mission to Saturn, which began in 1997 with the launch of the Cassini-Huygens satellite.
JPL engineers took real mission data from the spacecraft – boiled down multiple gigabyte files into a few megabytes — and developed a game-like environment using Unity. The result was CASSIE – a game-like odyssey that appeals to a general populace and is accessible to museums and science centers regardless of hardware.
The CASSIE expedition tracks the satellite over a three-and-a-half year period as it moves along its course and performs maneuvers as planned by mission scientists and navigators. In addition, the user can take control of the “camera” viewing the satellite to change its view and focus on the details of Saturn or its encounters with seven of the planet’s mysterious moons.
Due to the success of CASSIE, NASA JPL is developing a second version and yet another game-like odyssey using Unity, which will explore a mission to Jupiter’s largest moon, Europa. The “Europa Explorer” project is expected to debut in March 2008. To explore Saturn and its many moons via CASSIE, visit: http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/multimedia/CASSIE/.

‘See it Before You Buy It’ Now Applies to 3D Content Purchased Online
Montreal, QC (PRWEB) September 5, 2008
See it in 3D before you buy it: that is the founding idea of Presto3D.com, a new marketplace for digital models launched today. In what could be considered a natural step forward, buyers of 3D models for animation, architecture, gaming, and other applications can now preview models in 3D without ever leaving the browser.
The process is fully automatic; an artist submits a model for sale in a format produced by one of the major 3D authoring tools (3dsMax, Autodesk Maya, etc.) at a price they believe is fair. Presto3D creates a 3D preview of the model, also making the original model available in COLLADA, a universal file format. Once the preview gets final approval from the artist, it can then be viewed in the browser by all prospective buyers.
“Before Presto3D, the only preview of the model you got to see was a 2D image,” says Joshua Koopferstock, product manager for Presto3D. “Imagine if you went to iStockphoto to buy photos and instead of a picture preview, the only description they gave you was ‘this is a photo of a woman in a red hat’. There’s a good chance that what you’re buying would is not exactly what you need.”
“The same goes for 3D models. Most buyers come to a 3D marketplace because it is more cost-effective to buy certain models than to create the models themselves. But if the model is going to require hours of fix-up work, that cost-saving benefit vanishes. With a 3D preview, we get rid of these unpleasant surprises.”
From a technical standpoint, presenting a 3D preview poses a much more complex challenge than simply displaying 2D images. To overcome these hurdles, Presto3D uses several pieces of technology developed by its parent company, Feeling Software.
“Over the course of many projects, we have developed a proprietary 3D engine called the Feeling Engine,” explains Christian Laforte, co-founder and CEO of the 3-year-old software company. “With that, and drawing from our experience with COLLADA and 3D file-format interchange, we were in a unique position to build a site like Presto3D.”
Presto3D can be visited at http://www.presto3d.com.
About Feeling Software:
Feeling Software, founded by brothers Christian and Guillaume Laforte in 2004, is specialized in 3D graphic software and computer vision. Prior to creating Presto3D, Feeling Software completed contracts for industry leaders such as Google, Adobe, and Sony in the field of 3D graphics.

New Toolkit First to Directly Publish 3D PDF Content
London, UK (PRWEB) September 5, 2006
PDF3D™ technology enables publishing 3D visualization, designs, models and data, harnessing the free Adobe® PDF Reader. Now for the first time a development tool covers the complete path from 3D data to generation and publishing 3D PDF interactive content.
With the addition of the PDF3D™ SDK (Software Development Kit) Library, applications with 3D data can be extended to publish, share and distribute interactive models through email or the web. With Adobe’s ubiquitous support for 3D viewing PDF files, a ready-made platform is available on most desktops ready to receive 3D content. ISVs and application developers can now add “Save As 3D PDF” menus using the PDF3D SDK, avoiding other intermediary file formats or external conversion programs. When models are embedded in a PDF file, recipients can rotate, zoom and pan 3D models while reading the document.
The PDF3D™ C++ geometric software component library is designed for any developer with 3D data to publish. Specific solution examples using the library are provided for Manufacturing, Energy, Aerospace and Engineering sectors, including connectors for any VTK (Visualization Tool Kit) based applications. Software vendors supplying 3D modelling and analysis tools will benefit from PDF3D, allowing their end-users to accelerate 3D visualization and collaboration with the trusted PDF format, including attribute and background information in the same document file.
“I am very pleased that PDF3D is available” says Frank Arnott, Managing Director of Oxford Visual Geosciences Ltd. “Our GeoExpress application needs 3D publishing capability because we have experienced geologists and geophysicists navigating through combined 3D geological and geophysical structures and needing to present reports on their findings. We soon hope to use the PDF3D facilities on mineral and petroleum exploration field projects where I’m sure we will see much improved communication and productivity by reporting to our clients in 3D PDF format.”
According to a recent report by Thilo Koslowski and Marc Halpern, Manufacturing Analysts, Gartner, Inc.1 “Current collaboration solutions produce only limited results because they do not share sufficient 3-D content across a broad range of design applications … Broader use of more 3-D content will ultimately increase the demand for easy-to-use 3D model creation tools” In the report “Ubiquitous Commercial Use of 3-D Product Content Imminent”2 they observe “Accelerated use of 3-D content by different classes of users will have a dramatic impact on information and business processes.”
Integration of the PDF3D SDK by ISV’s keeps pace with sophisticated user demand, by letting users generate 3D content without forcing them to buy 3rd party file converters or enabling publication for the first time where no converters exist. ISV’s can quickly leverage PDF innovation, taking full advantage of the latest from Adobe® and Intel® Corporate Technology Group, backed by industry standards.
Pricing and Availability
PDF3D SDK is available immediately for Windows® with an estimated license price of 0. PDF3D SDK may be purchased online at the www.pdf3d.co.uk store, with OEM and volume pricing available on request.

Cost, Content, and Convenience Important Factors for Consumers Considering 3D TV, According to NPD
Port Washington, NY (Vocus) February 26, 2010
While consumers express some interest in 3D TV they may not be running out to purchase a new TV set just yet, according to leading market research company The NPD Group. NPD’s Snapshot Report: 3D Television found that about a third of consumers were at least “somewhat interested” in having 3D capability on their TV, but cost, content availability, and convenience of watching in 3D ranked high among concerns about adopting the technology.
The cost of a 3D TV and the cost of getting 3D content on their TV were concerns for more than 60 percent of consumers. Having to possibly pay more for 3D content from their television provider was perceived as a potential downside of 3D TV by 64 percent of consumers, and 61 percent were concerned about 3D adding significant cost to the price of a TV. In addition, the limited amount of content available was sited as a concern by 39 percent of consumers.
Cost and convenience also came into play in terms of the glasses that major manufacturers will require for viewing 3D content. The inconvenience of wearing 3D glasses was sited as an inhibitor for 53 percent of consumers. 3D glasses would also add on to the cost of viewing 3D content.
“Manufacturers are counting on 3D to accelerate the replacement cycle the way HD did,” said Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis at NPD. “Early adopters will look past significant price premiums and limited optimized content in the name of bringing home even more of the cinematic experience as they find 3D capabilities included among other premium features.”
DisplaySearch, an NPD Group company, expects 1.2 million 3D-capable TVs to ship in 2010, with that number growing to 15.6 million in 2013, according to their Quarterly TV Design and Features Report.
Methodology
More than 2,000 adults from NPD’s online panel took part in the survey which was conducted in late 2009.
