Onkyo Introduces the World’s First THX Certified 3D-Ready A/V Receiver

March 31, 2010

Onkyo USA has announced March deliveries of its first 3D-Ready home theater receivers and home theater in a box (HTiB) systems. The new models consist of three A/V receivers and three HTiB systems ranging in price from $299 to $599, and all of them support the new HDMI v1.4 connectivity standard for new 3D video displays and Audio Return Channel capabilities. All are exceptionally well equipped to provide a superior music, home theater sound and video experience, with high build-quality and offering excellent value.

For Onkyo, a name that translates roughly to ‘sound harmony’ in Japanese, sound quality is preeminent. All these new receivers and HTiBs now decode lossless Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio bitstreams, and include new 192-kHz/24-bit Burr-Brown PCM1690 DAC’s that are highly resistant to clock jitter and provide a remarkable 113-dB dynamic range. The lineup includes Onkyo’s new easy-to-setup overlaid onscreen graphical display that lets the user watch the program in the background while using the function menus. Additionally, all 2010 HDMI v1.4 models include a new feature call HDMI Thru. HDMI Thru allows content to pass through to the TV when the receiver is in a standby state.

The new TX-SR608 7.2-channel THX-Select2 Plus certified receiver has new power amplifier section that uses three-stage inverted Darlington output topology, and a power boost from 90 to 100 watts. Audyssey DSX dimensional sound processing has been added to its predecessor’s Dolby PLIIz capabilities. Additionally, all video sources, including those using the new PC input, and regardless of source resolution, can be upscaled to big and beautiful 1080p via HDMI and Faroudja DCDi Cinema™. The TX-SR608 will also include a front HDMI input, a feature first introduced by Onkyo in 2009. The TX-SR608 will be available in April at an MSRP of $599.

The 5.1-channel TX-SR308 and 7.1-channel TX-SR508 round out this initial announcement of A/V Receivers from Onkyo. The TX-SR308 will be available in March with an MSRP of $299, a followed by the TX-SR508 in April for $399.

The HTiB package systems, which each consist of a receiver, speakers and a subwoofer, are the 5.1-channel HT-S3300 and 7.1-channel HT-S5300; the latter also includes an iPod dock. Thanks to the HDMI interface and the use of advanced Dolby and DTS codecs, all of these receivers and systems are also capable of decoding lossless Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. The HT-S3300 will ship in March with an MSRP of $379, followed by the HT-S5300 in April for $599.

A third packaged system departs from the traditional HTiB form factor and uses a combination subwoofer and 3D Ready A/V receiver plus two front speakers. It uses Onkyo’s own Theater-Dimensional processor to create an immersive and convincing surround effect through just 2.1 channels. The HTX-22HDX has three HDMI v1.4 inputs, handles HD audio formats from DTS and Dolby; offers four distinct audio modes for gaming; and outputs for additional speakers. The HTX-22HDX will ship in May with a $349 MSRP.

“Onkyo’s 2010 entry-level product line represents a significant jump over last year’s line,” said Paul Wasek, Onkyo USA’s marketing manager. “We are excited to deliver this first wave of 3D capable products. By upgrading to 1.4, even on the least expensive HTiB, we have eliminated all HDMI pass-through products and allowed HD audio formats to be used across the line. The fact that consumers can now buy a THX-Certified receiver with 1080p upscaling, Burr-Brown DACs, PC input and more for under $600 shows Onkyo’s clear commitment to delivering performance and value to consumers.”

All of Onkyo’s receivers offer exceptional connectivity options with as many as six HDMI inputs, plus component and composite video, numerous stereo input jacks, optical/coaxial digital inputs, and the popular front-panel connections on many models. Two models include Sirius Radio connections, and all these receivers incorporate Onkyo’s proprietary Universal Port (U-Port) connector which simplifies connections to optional HD Radio tuners and iPod Docks (included with the HT-S5300).

Taking the Wonder of 3D to people’s home

In the US, Samsung is launching a holistic marketing campaign under the name “Dedicated to Wonder,” a high-profile marketing effort that includes television advertising and the first 3D Cinema advertising (Spot?) for a consumer electronics brand. Samsung assembled an elite production crew, including the Oscar-winning director of photography, Mauro Fiore, and is bringing the wonder of the 3D experience to life with this new marketing campaign. New commercials will begin hitting the air this week, highlighting Samsung’s 3D technology and the wonder it brings to the home entertainment experience.

Samsung’s in-store display plan is also key to exposing consumers to the technology and educating them on the value of 3D. Samsung’s internal research shows that while awareness of 3D technology is high, less than a third of consumers have had any experience with it. For this reason, Samsung is strengthening marketing activities in an effort to make it easier for consumers to experience 3D. In 2010, consumers can expect to experience this immersive experience in more than 5,000 stores across the nation. Displays will start being deployed later in the month.

“Our commitment to innovation has always been strong. We’re not only delivering elegant design and eco-friendly energy consumption, but we’re adding a new dimension to superior home entertainment through a broad lineup of 3D LED TVs,” said John Revie, vice president of Home Entertainment for Samsung Electronics America. “We are passionate about this year’s LED TV lineup as we once again raise the bar on technology innovation by delivering a superior TV experience and leadership in the HDTV space.”

Built-in 3D

This year’s premium LED TV models, the C7000, C8000 and C9000, feature Samsung’s Real240Hz™ refresh rate technology and Samsung’s proprietary built-in 3D processor that is compatible with major 3D format standards. While the TVs are optimized for viewing 3D content, the built in 3D processor lets you render 2D content into 3D in real time.

Combined with the company’s 3D Blu-ray player or home theater system (BD-C6900 and HT-C6930W), and unique Samsung-designed 3D Active Glasses, Samsung offers a total 3D solution for home entertainment. To further kick-start the 3D experience, consumers, for a limited time, will receive a free 3D Starter Kit with the purchase of a Samsung 3D HDTV and either the Samsung BD-C6900 3D Blu-ray Player or the HT-C6930W 3D Home Theater System. Included in the kit is a 3D version of “Monsters vs. Aliens”® and two pairs of Samsung 3D Active Glasses.

Unsurpassed Picture Quality with Precision Dimming

Samsung’s LED C8000 and C6800 include Samsung’s Precision Dimming technology that merges the advantages of LED edge-lighting with the control of local dimming technology in directly back-lit LED televisions. Precision Dimming uses an array of special LEDs that create diamond-shaped areas of light to illuminate objects on the panel. These areas can vary in size and shape according to the light required, and an algorithm calculates where the light should be targeted to intensify contrast. The result: higher contrast ratios, deeper blacks, vibrant colors and enhanced energy efficiency.

Connected TV and Samsung Apps

The LED 6500, 6800, 7000, 8000 and 9000 come with Internet@TV connectivity which includes Samsung Apps, allowing users, with internet access or a wireless network with our Link Stick* (or similar), to download and view applications on their TV screens. Samsung Apps provides consumers with a broad selection of content and applications from leading services like The Associated Press, Netflix, Pandora, Twitter, USA TODAY, and VUDU. More than 20 apps should launch by the end of March, with more to come.**

Also included is Allshare™ for wireless connectivity and multimedia sharing across DLNA® Certified devices, allowing consumers to wirelessly transfer photos, movies and music from PCs, mobile phones and digital cameras to their TV for big screen viewing at home with friends and family.

Focus on Design

In 2010, Samsung builds on its tradition of innovative design by introducing narrower bezels and brushed metal frames in silver and black – pushing the limits beyond the familiar black bezels of many HDTV’s. The LED TVs are very slim, with the 7000 Series measuring one-inch, and LED C8000 measuring 0.9 inches and the LED C9000 measuring a pencil thin 0.3 inches. For select models, Samsung also developed a groundbreaking four-legged quad stand that makes the TV look more like furniture and a new “mystic earth” Touch of Color™ (ToC™) design scheme with chrome edging to better match a living room’s décor. The new LED TVs match Samsung’s 2010 line of Blu-ray players and home theater systems.

Green Efficiency

All these functionalities are delivered without compromising on the energy efficiency that Samsung LED TVs are known for and meet even higher standards of sustainability. They all exceed the more stringent EnergyStar® 4.0 guidelines, and are slimmer and lighter for easier shipping and storing. The 2010 LED TVs are the highest performing and most eco-conscious HDTV products Samsung has ever released.

The Touch Screen Remote Control

The C9000 Series come equipped with a premium 3-inch color touch-screen remote control – which features a live feed of the channel you’re currently watching. For the C9000 only, the easy to use, full touch-screen remote control comes complete with an earphone jack and Twin View, which lets you watch TV or Blu-ray DVD titles on the remote or TV at the same time. The remote includes Allshare and a QWERTY keyboard for the LED C7000, C8000 and C9000, and at 2.4 Ghz, its integrated Wi-Fi and infrared technology controls the TV, STB and AV devices with on-screen buttons. The touch screen remote is available as an accessory for the LED C7000 and C8000, as well as select LCD and Plasma Series.

Accessories

The LinkStick makes it easy to connect to online content and acts like a thumb drive. When connected to a USB 2.0 port, it allows for online connectivity, offering easy access to Samsung Apps and InfoLink™ RSS data.

Samsung’s innovative ultra-slim wall-mount solutions enhance Samsung’s latest ultra-thin televisions by reducing the gap between the TV and the wall to a mere 0.6 inches, making the experience similar to hanging a picture frame. They feature a unique cord system to help you stay untangled for a neat and organized appearance. The wall mounts come in two versions that support various TV models.

3D Cinema Advertising Campaign by Samsung

March 31, 2010

Samsung Electronics America, Inc., a market leader and award-winning innovator in consumer electronics, will be the first electronics company in the U.S. to launch a 3D cinema advertising campaign to highlight the wonder of Samsung’s new 3D LED TV.

Global media agency network Starcom MediaVest Group developed the media plan for the new 3D cinema marketing effort on behalf of Samsung, working in collaboration with NCM Media Networks, a leading integrated media company reaching U.S. consumers in movie theaters, online and through mobile technology.

Premiering on April 2, 2010, and running through July, Samsung’s new 3D TV cinema campaign will be seen nationwide prior to several highly-anticipated 3D films in select movie theaters in the NCM Cinema Network – the nation’s largest digital in-theater network comprised of theaters owned by AMC Entertainment Inc., Cinemark Holdings, Inc., Regal Entertainment Group and other leading exhibitors across the U.S.

To showcase Samsung’s cutting-edge 3D cinema advertising creative, NCM will integrate unique new 3D elements into its FirstLook digital entertainment and advertising pre-feature program to coincide with the campaign launch. Designed with the audience in mind, NCM’s FirstLook provides a high-quality entertainment experience for patrons and an engaging marketing platform for advertisers.

“We believe that the best way to generate excitement for our cutting-edge 3D TVs is by presenting them in the most engaging 3D environment that exists today – the cinema,” said Peggy Ang, vice president of marketing communications at Samsung Electronics America. “Samsung is the leading innovator in 3D TV technology and it is only natural that we be the electronics industry forerunner in 3D advertising as well.”

Samsung’s new :30 second 3D spot, entitled “Wonder-full,” was created by Leo Burnett and an elite production crew, including the Oscar-winning director of photography, Mauro Fiore, to bring the wonder of the 3D experience to life. Asking, “Ever wonder how amazing it would be to experience life in another dimension?” the spot introduces audiences to a new dimension in TV – the Samsung 3D LED TV. The wonder of Samsung is illustrated using the latest 3D digital cinema technology, which has captivated moviegoers across the globe. The 3D cinema spot is part of a new holistic marketing platform, called “Dedicated to Wonder,” that speaks to the pride and passion Samsung has in creating moments of Wonder when consumers use Samsung products.

“Samsung has long been an innovator in cinema advertising, so working together with them on the launch of their first 3D campaign was a great opportunity,” said Cliff Marks, NCM Media Networks’ president of sales and marketing. “While 3D is just the latest arrow in the quiver for marketers to use to engage movie audiences, it will be exciting to see how exceptional brands like Samsung continue to evolve creatively in our larger-than-life medium.”

Through this licensing agreement, Cablevision’s content providers will be able use RealD tools to format their 3D content and deliver it to millions of homes in crisp, clear high definition 3D. The delivery of RealD Format content is compatible with Cablevision’s current HD broadcast and on-demand systems and works with existing HD set-top boxes

The RealD Format will first be utilized for the March 24th MSG (NASDAQ: MSG) telecast of the Rangers vs. Islanders hockey game from Madison Square Garden, the first network hockey telecast ever produced in 3D and the first time a live 3D sports telecast will be available to homes in the U.S. In addition to the game’s 3D telecast available to Cablevision subscribers in the Tri-state area with 3D-enabled TVs, a special viewing party will be held at the Theater at Madison Square Garden utilizing the RealD Format for content delivery and RealD’s XL Cinema System for projection on the big screen.

“3D content in the home is the next frontier in premium entertainment and we look forward to providing our customers with an unmatched 3D experience in cooperation with RealD,” said Jim Blackley, Cablevision’s senior vice president of engineering and technology. “We’ve been extensively testing the RealD Format and believe it is the highest quality and most broadly compatible method for delivering 3D video to our customers.”

“This agreement with Cablevision marks another milestone in the emergence of 3D entertainment in the home,” said Michael V. Lewis, Chairman and CEO of RealD. “Now Cablevision customers who have 3D television sets will be able to experience high definition 3D from the comfort of their living room beginning with the Rangers vs. Islanders game.”

The RealD Format builds on the company’s patented side-by-side 3D formatting technology and is capable of delivering crisp, clear, high definition 3D to the home utilizing all channels of the existing HD broadcast infrastructure. Cablevision has chosen to use the side-by-side method as its primary method of delivering 3D content due to its ability to deliver high-quality progressive and interlaced video over existing infrastructure including existing HD set-top boxes and DVRs.

LG Introduces First LED Backlit 3D TV

March 31, 2010

LG announced this Thursday that its upcoming LX9500 will be the worlds first HDTV set to combine a fully-LED-backlit LCD with 3D support.

Word regarding the LX9500 first surfaced last month, when a leaked document revealed LG’s roadmap for the coming year. LG opted not to comment on the legitimacy of last month’s leak, however the new 3D LED TV has now been confirmed.

The LX9500 will be available in two models, one coming in at 47 inches, and the other a larger model measuring 55 inches. Both of these thin 1080p LED sets come packed with a whole host of features, including USB 2.0, HDMI, integrated Skype software, and of course 3D support.

The sets, which do require you to wear USB-powered glasses, should arrive in Korea within the coming months, beating rival Samsung to market. It’ll launch in Europe and the US this May. No pricing details were provided for global markets, but when the LX9500 launches in Korea it is expected to cost around 4.7million South Korean Won, which is roughly $4,000.

Panasonic and Samsung Hustle to Advertise 3D TV

March 31, 2010

We have gone to great pains in making you aware of 3-D TVs, and the technological revolution that, manufacturers claim, they will foment upon their release. After having the opportunity to peruse various companies’ offerings at CES this January, we were candid with you in our ambivalence, and our opinion holds firm four months later. It’s reckless, if not impossible, to endorse or reject a technology in such a fetal stage. While we pundits urge caution, though, manufacturers are busy pushing for consumption.

According to a recent overview by the New York Times, manufacturers like Panasonic and Samsung are both hustling to configure marketing and advertising campaigns. In order to promote their respective 3-D TV lines, Panasonic has dispatched 18-wheelers equipped with 3-D demo stations, LG has been airing 30-second commercials for its 3D-capable Infinia line, and Samsung has shelled out $100 million for promotion, some of which has gone to a 30-second commercial shot with the same technology used in ‘Avatar.’

For our part, we’d much rather see quality content than flashy commercials, and, until we get the former, we’ll be holding on to our money. We’d rather be considered late to the party than write a $3,000 check so that we can watch the same copy of ‘Shrek 2: 3-D’ over and over again.
